I have a ritual I indulge whenever I travel to somewhere on the water, be it ocean, river, pond or stream: I put my toe in the water, as a small way to say that I was there. It’s a traveler’s habit I picked it up years ago from a great friend of mine, and I’ve continued to do it over the years because it’s a reminder of the joy that comes from reaching the edge.

So when I travel to a town on the shore, it’s the first thing I do: let’s see the water, let’s walk on the shore, let’s see the edge of the world.
