“It is not important if photographs are good. It’s important that they are interesting.” (source)

Remembering 9/11, New York City, NY
Perfect quote from a great essay by John Loengard, via Miguel Garcia-Guzman.
Before I became a picture editor, I assumed that “good photographers” took “good pictures” because they had a special eye. What I found was that good photographers take good pictures because they take great pains to have good subjects in front of their cameras.
That’s why I explore, look around, and keep moving forward. Looking for the right subject, the right opportunity, the right door to walk through, the right corner to turn, and then doing it.
Entrepreneurs and venture capitalists say the same thing, in a different way. Product and market fit, and the right entrepreneur to take advantage of the opportunity.
For photographers, it’s a combination of subject and situation, and the right photographer to take advantage of the opportunity.
It’s really not that different. Different tools and goals, but the same fundamental human action. Opportunity, spotted and taken.
