Saying Hello (to rumble strips, Texas and social experiences)

The joy of rumble strips, brushes with American law-enforcement, and a story about a drive from New Orleans to Austin with my friend Lloyd Davis during his Tuttle 2 Texas trip. Hi Lloyd!

Lloyd Davis, the latest daily recap from the Tuttle 2 Texas trip this past March, recapping a drive from New Orleans to Austin for SXSW:

Taylor and I see eye to eye on a whole lot of stuff. He turned up a Tuttle one day last year when we were on the roof of Inn the Park. He’d met Alan Patrick at SXSW09 and been encouraged to seek us out. He was passing through on his way to somewhere exotic. And he passed through two or three more times that year before settling in NOLA and each time we got together and chewed the fat. But never for 9 hours, a few feet from each other all the way. We think very similarly about the importance of well-crafted social experiences, but Taylor has something I lack, that all-American entrepreneurial spirit which is what I go to SXSWi to be reminded of. It didn’t feel like 9 hours.

Yes, there were times when the rumble-strips jolted both of us back to consciousness. And I enjoyed meeting my first American law-enforcement officer, complete with chewing tobacco, and explaining to him just what SXSW was and why a guy with Virginia license plates might be driving an Englishman through Houston. My senses were completely blown by the ridiculous range of choice of types of jelly-bean and beef jerky available on my first visit to a Louisiana Truckstop. I was intrigued to learn that there are different traffic laws between states and had to ask twitter whether it was legal to text while driving in Texas. I also loved the idea of numbering the intersections according to distance so you can work out how far it is from one to the next.

Great firsts, great times

I have a feeling I’ll be doing a lot of NOLA / NYC diptychs for awhile.

Just a normal, everyday walk across a bridge. Brooklyn, New York.

One of many great firsts. More, big and small, to come.

One of many great times. More, still to come. Trust me.
