What’s your daily routine to keep you on course?

What do you do every day to focus your efforts, accomplish your short-term goals and keep you working toward your long term goals?

Write them down is popular. I do that. Kinda. You see, while I’ve always maintained hand-written lists of to-dos and short-term goals, writing down the long-term goals tends to slip my mind.

Fast forward to today. “Do less” popped into my mind while sitting in Union Square. Chris and I spent a while talking about how we manage daily tasks and long term goals. Colleen wrote about her new morning ritual, a combination of writing down long-term and daily goals (with checkboxes). And deep in my inbox, a reminder from a great, observant, thoughtful person popped out at me about daily goal-writing and realization exercises.

I’m going to sleep in tomorrow. But now I know the first thing I need to do when I wake up.

What are you going to do?

Solid routine. And you prolly would need to sleep in less if you actually ever slept ;)

As for my own make things happen – email, Things, memory, but mostly knowing my business and routine.

Just have to define the direction at the very beginning of the day. After that, the rest is easy :)

I use a simple implementation of GTD (http://www.rosshill.com.au/article/getting-thin…) in Notepad on iPad. Each night I'll look at what I have on for the next few days from my Next list and my Calendar, and every week or so I zoom out to the bigger picture.

That seems to work pretty well.

Breaking things down into tangible action steps is pretty key. I tend to write pretty detailed to-do lists to help me break things down. That, and write down the three most important things for me to get done that day, and the three most important long-term things to work towards.
