Consider a question, posed by Ze Frank:

You partake in a medical experiment. In the experiment you are given one of two pills. You don’t know which one until after you take it. One shortens your life by 10 years, and the other lengthens your life by 10 years. You have just found out which pill you took. The question is: which pill do you think will increase the quality of your life the most? Would one make you change the way you live your life more than the other?

Whoa. What's the sample size and the psychological testing done on these groups first!?!

Some people will always be striving to be better – no pill changes their overall view of life, maybe just the timeline you give yourself for reaching your goals.

Some people no matter what feel slighted – cheated – like the pill with less years is just another string of bad luck that they always encounter.

I say scrap the pills, take the bull by the horns, and charge ahead.

But then again, I'm not your average “sign up for medical experiments person!”

My instant internal reaction to the question was “Don't tell me. I don't care. I'm going to live as if my life was short. Maybe it'll turn out to be long. In any case, I'm only going to concern myself with things I can control.”

Or, to quote Mickey Rivers (yes, a baseball player): “I don't get upset over things I can't control, because if I can't control them there's no use getting upset. And I don't get upset over the things I can control, because if I can control them there's no use in getting upset.”

The interesting bit is that the answer one provides is less important than thinking about the question and making whatever modifications in their life are important to them.

The comments on Ze's post, btw, are worth a perusal.

Do I get to know when I would have died?

How would it change your answer?

(this question came up in the comments to Ze's post. worth a look…)

Well, if I was going to die at 40, I might take the longer pill. If I was going to die at 90, I might want the shorter pill.

Depends. I'm all about quality of life. I've got some…. first hand experience about living in a body that's failing, so I'd rather live well then live suffering.

(I'll take a look at his post in a bit. Trying…. to get work done.)

Ok; but that's kind of a different question. You don't get to choose which pill, you've already taken it, and you've just found out which one you took. The question is about the information you receive and how it will change your life from that point on.
