Marc Andresson wrote about career planning last fall in two parts: Sept/07 and Oct/07. He tackles career planning in a much more pragmatic and yet still grandiose way than traditional advice on career planning. If I can paraphrase: don’t plan, focus on developing skills and pursuing opportunities.

He also points out an interesting way of thinking from Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert:

But if you want something extraordinary, you have two paths:

1. Become the best at one specific thing.
2. Become very good (top 25%) at two or more things.

Adams points out #1 is very, very hard. But #2 is very possible.

What skills do you have that are in the top 25%?

* Maybe navel gazing and daydreaming are the same thing.
