It’s dead here anyway

Is the Internet dead? From a Portfolio.com interview of Mark Cuban:

Think of it this way. Way back when, electricity changed the world. It was the platform for everything electronic that we do today. Do you get excited about electricity or is it just a utility? Maybe old people who remember the advent of electricity still get excited about it. No one else does.

The internet is in the same position today. It’s no longer an exciting platform for societal and business change. It’s a utility. It’s something that is exciting to people who remember the old days of the internet.

It all depends on what you mean by “dead”. For what Cuban wants to do in business and life, it’s dead, but for the rest of use, it’s far from dead.

Update 8.27: Wow, it’s only Monday and there has already been a ton of comments on Cuban’s remarks, and even Cuban had to respond. Most commentators are missing the point, though – Cuban’s definition of dead is a bit different from the viewpoint most commentators and bloggers are taking. Activity does not prove that the Internet is alive – “running in place” and thrashing around is different than the type of growth that Cuban is talking about.

Overheard

Me: “I’d like to buy a lottery ticket, Mega Millions, please”
Store clerk: “How old are you?”
Me: “How old do you have be be?”
Store clerk: “18.”
Me: (lightly flipping wallet without any intention of showing ID) “I’m certainly older than 18. 30, in fact”
Store clerk: “OK”
Me: “Certainly old enough to know that buying this is pointless. Old enough to know better.”
Store clerk: (mild light of laughter in eyes)
