I got tired of storing all my random photography sites and new finds in my ever expanding range of locations from del.ico.us to gmail to bookmarks to scraps of paper, so I compiled a short and starting list that is sure to expand over time. Physical space required to move 15K people per hour, by method of transportation. (from kottke).
As an unabashed fan of mass transport in theory, in practice I think that people forget in the debate the inability of mass transport to work in a hub-and-spoke system outside of densely populated areas. The hub and spoke system for land travel breaks down because the traveller is limited in their ability to get from the eventual starting or end points of the journey from the hubs in an efficient manner. Either our transportation to and from hubs is limited or costly (taxis, walking, buses, friends picking us up in cars), or our hubs are difficult to reach, inefficient, or inadequately located near other mass transport systems linking us to other hubs. Outside of densely populated areas, mass transport is not efficient for the individual traveller, therefore car travel (and individual car ownership) becomes the best solution.
Therefore, we need point-to-point transport methods, which means we need cars.
(Ed. 1/14/07: At least, sometimes we need cars, in some places. It’s not an all or nothing proposition. Balance.)
