The phrase "a New York minute" is often used
as a hyperbole for a very short period of time, most definitely shorter
than a full minute.
Likely originating from outside New York (or Texas?) as a cynical commentary on the fast pace of life in the big city, it has been become a proud mark of success for those living in New York (or least that is the best I can figure out as an outsider myself). Rather than thinking about it as the quick passage of time, in my mind the phrase can apply to the amount of life that can happen in a minute, in New York and elsewhere. Large chunks of time can slip away when we are engrossed in our lives and our activities, but given the proper attention each minute can contain a lifetime of observations, thoughts, actions, outcomes and lessons. It is all about our interpretation. Early Feb this year [2007], on a quick day visit to New York City, I spent an afternoon trying to view the ordinary and familiar places with an open eye. The two short compilations of shots are about the movement of life around us, and how we all move through it with a different view and pace. |
